Abdul Shareefunnisa is a 39-year-old resident of Kanur Village in Krishna District. She lives with her husband, a daily wage labourer, and their two sons, who are studying in the 10th and 9th standards. Shareefunnisa is a skilled tailor and works from home, contributing to the family's income through her tailoring business. About a year ago, Shareefunnisa developed health problems that affected the movement of her hands. She visited the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Penamaluru, from where she was referred to the Krishna District Leprosy Officer (DLO). She was diagnosed with leprosy-related nerve damage, which resulted in a right ulnar claw deformity. The condition affected the movement of her right hand, making it difficult for her to stitch clothes, hold objects and carry out routine household activities. As tailoring was her primary source of livelihood, the disability had a significant impact on her income and independence. After receiving counselling and guidance from the medical team, Shareefunnisa understood the importance of timely treatment and the rehabilitation support available to persons affected by leprosy. She was referred for reconstructive surgery through LEPRA Society. In October 2024, with the support of the Plastic Surgery Unit at Government General Hospital (GGH), Vijayawada, she underwent successful reconstructive surgery for her right ulnar claw. The surgery restored significant function to her hand, enabling her to carry out her daily activities and resume her tailoring work with much greater ease. To support her economic rehabilitation, LEPRA Society also provided a Socio-Economic Rehabilitation (SER) loan of ₹10,000. The financial assistance enabled her to invest in resources to strengthen her tailoring business and improve her family's income. Following the surgery and livelihood support, Shareefunnisa regained confidence and was able to return to work with fewer limitations. She now hopes to expand her tailoring business and provide better educational opportunities for her children. Shareefunnisa conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to LEPRA Society and the medical team at GGH Vijayawada for restoring the function of her hand and helping her rebuild her livelihood. Shareefunnisa's journey demonstrates how timely diagnosis, reconstructive surgery and livelihood support can help persons affected by leprosy regain their independence, restore their dignity and improve their quality of life. Mr. Ramaiah (name changed to protect privacy) is a 39-year-old farmer from Asifabad District. He lives with his mother, wife and three children. Farming is the primary source of income for the family. In 2021, Ramaiah noticed loss of sensation in his right foot, causing dryness and difficulty in wearing footwear. He also developed skin patches on his hands with reduced sensation. He initially consulted a local private practitioner and, when his symptoms did not improve, was referred to a skin specialist. The specialist diagnosed him with leprosy (Hansen's disease) and referred him to the government health facility for Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT). He completed the prescribed treatment in 2022, following which his symptoms resolved and he returned to his normal routine. Two years later, Ramaiah developed reddish skin lesions, pain and swelling in his left foot, along with difficulty lifting it while walking. When he visited the local government health facility, the leprosy staff had been transferred. He was advised to seek treatment at a tertiary care centre in Hyderabad. As Hyderabad was far from his district, he consulted several doctors and teaching hospitals locally and also revisited the skin specialist, who treated him with medication for six months. However, his symptoms persisted. Ramaiah later contacted the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) staff, who advised him to visit the LEPRA Referral Centre near his residence in Asifabad. On examination, the LEPRA team diagnosed him with a lepra reaction and left foot drop. Appropriate treatment and rehabilitation were initiated immediately. During treatment, his blood glucose levels increased as a side effect of the medication, and he was referred to LEPRA Society's clinic in Hyderabad for specialised care. With continued treatment and follow-up, he made a complete recovery over the course of one year. Today, Ramaiah is able to walk comfortably and has resumed his farming activities and daily routine. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to LEPRA Society for the timely diagnosis, specialised treatment and continuous support that helped him regain his health and livelihood.
