LEPRA gained experience of over 20 years in HIV and AIDS in care, support, prevention and treatment and working with the key populations at higher risk. LEPRA works through capacity building, knowledge sharing, technical support and advocacy to support the delivery of effective, innovative, community-based HIV and other health programs. Currently, covering 69 districts of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states of India.

LEPRA started its journey in HIV/AIDS in the year 1995, with a pilot project to improve treatment-seeking Behaviour for Sexually-Transmitted Infections (STIs) among truckers and reduce the prevalence of HIV. In the year 2001, we partnered with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance for implementing the Frontiers’ Prevention Project (FPP) in Andhra Pradesh (2001-2005) and linking organisation. Our binding factors for implementing HIV programmes are stigma and discrimination, health and rights of the people with whom we work, learning/sharing good practices in delivering quality programmes, strengthening and enhancing HIV services to the marginalized communities.

LEPRA identified as state-level nodal NGO by Andhra Pradesh State AIDS control society to implement and coordinate the prevention of parent-to-child transmission project (2005-11) covering eight HIV prevalent districts in Andhra Pradesh.

1. The HIV-TB coordination outreach project (2006-10) in nine districts of Andhra Pradesh under the GFATM (round 2, 3 & 4) with Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society.
2. CHAHA Project (2007-2011, Principal Recipient (PR) is India HIV/AIDS Alliance), GFATM R6 is a community-based child-centred care and support programme for children and families affected by AIDS implemented in Andhra Pradesh.
3. The Hifazat project (2013-16, PR-Emmanuel Health Association), GFATM R9, Strengthened the capacity, reach and quality of harm reduction services of six Injecting Drug User’s Targeted Intervention projects in Odisha.
4. Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission project (2010-14, PR- ILFS), RCC 2 through and implemented in four districts of Madhya Pradesh.
5. Implemented Indore Community Care Centre (2009-13), Gwalior CCC (2012-13) by HLFPPT [SR] and Population Foundation India (PR).
6. Link workers Scheme (2013) is supported by Madhya Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, Bhopal (M.P.), GFATM R4 project The objective is to reach out to HRGs and vulnerable men and women in rural areas with information, knowledge, skills on STI/HIV prevention and risk reduction covering 12 districts of Madhya Pradesh
7. Vihaan project (2013-17, PR- Alliance India) focussed on care support and treatment for PLHIV as SR implemented with 8 CBOs.

• • Frontiers Prevention Project (2002-05), funded by BMGF – implemented in 14 sites for scale-up effective responses by female sex workers, men having sex with men, IDU groups to HIV & AIDS in Rayalaseema and Telangana regions of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Avahan Projects (2004-10), funded by BMGFimplemented in five sites covering FSWS/MSMs of Hyderabad, Kamareddy, Medak and Adilabad districts.
  • Sexual Reproductive Health Project (2006-07), funded by DFID – community-driven approaches to address the feminisation of HIV/AIDS and implemented in Kamareddy, Nalgonda, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar districts.
  • The Andhra Pradesh Counsellors Project (2003-11)is supported by Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society. This project aims to ensure quality counselling services and to develop a safe space for the physical, psychological, and knowledge parameters. The purpose is to support Andhra Pradesh AIDS Control Society in scaling up of integrated counselling and testing services by recruiting, training and mentoring the counsellors and lab technicians in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Jyoti Project (2005-11)funded by Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, USA, Andhra Pradesh State covering 23 districts of India. In the first phase of the project, a comprehensive HIV/AIDS programme is being implemented in the six identified districts (Prakasam, Guntur, Cuddapah, East Godavari, Nellore and Nizamabad) by Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI). The purpose of this programme is the establishment of a community-led approach to the prevention of HIV, care and support to PLHA. In the second phase, it implemented three interventions namely mainstreaming HIV/AIDS prevention with the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), an initiative by the Government of Andhra Pradesh; mobile counselling, testing and positive prevention tool kit training. The mainstreaming project is implemented in 62 health & nutrition pilot mandals of 22 districts in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Samastha Project (2006-2011),funded by Karnataka health promotion trust, India/University of Manitoba/USAID under cooperative agreement to ensure comprehensive, competent, compassionate care in all community care centres and the purpose is to operationalise national guidelines for comprehensive care, treatment and support interventions in community care centres of 5 coastal districts (Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, and East & West Godavari) of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Nurse Mentors programme (2010-11)initiated with the support of Clinton Foundation and implemented by LEPRA implemented under the health domain of ‘Balasahayoga project’ to provide quality care to patients in 21 community care centres in 11 districts of Andhra Pradesh. The objective is to introduce the concept of quality care and to strengthen the capacities of the nurse mentees in the CCCs. The major achievements are improved documentation, infection prevention and control measures, universal safety precautions and consistent nursing care procedures.
  • Sakhyam (2008-12), funded by European Union to improve health-seeking behaviour and health equity of slum dwellers and key vulnerable communities thereby reducing vulnerability to poor sexual and reproductive health outcomes mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS.
  • Arogya Project (2009-13)funded by European Union contributed in linking up the work of public, private, and CBOs to respond more effectively reaching high risk plus out of reach population to HIV/AIDS and TB in Dewas, Harda, Indore, and Bhopal districts.

• Vihaan Project (2018-21, India HIV/AIDS Alliance PR) for enhancing treatment adherence and retention in HIV care through Care and Support services for People Living with HIV/AIDS in Odisha and Chhattisgarh states covering 15 districts
• Ahana Project (2018-21, PR – PLAN India) for Improving Access to PPTCT Services in the Public and Private sector in Madhya Pradesh covering 52 districts
• Implementing Targeted Interventions for IDUs and FSWs in Odisha with Odisha AIDS Control Society support
• Supporting three CBOs of People Living with HIV for sustainability with IHAA support.
